Choices and Consequences

For nearly 25-years, Chuck Gallagher’s passion has been ethics. As a Hall of Fame, award-winning keynote speaker, consultant and book author, Chuck has spoken to corporations and associations throughout North America and Europe on making wise choices and the consequences of unethical decision making. His keynote speeches, breakout sessions and in-person as well as virtual presentations, are dynamic, informative and as compassionate. He has spoken on television, radio and numerous podcasts.

Several years ago, after the prompting of audience members who were immersed in the sports world, Chuck was urged to expand his speaking practice to the sports world. Why? Because the same issues that are currently plaguing business are also found in sports including scandals, fraud, a lack of executive diversity and inclusion issues, along with sexism and sexual abuse, unequal pay, bullying and a host of other problems. Clearly, the lines between the world of business and the world of sports are becoming more blurred.

“Where Business Ethics and Sports Ethics Intersect”

As we add blog posts to Sportsethics.com, and we talk about Chuck’s observations as a keynote speaker on topics of sports and business, we will expand on an interesting phenomenon. Chuck has found that business people, often “fearful” of talking about ethical issues in their industries or companies, will freely talk about sports scandals.

“It is a safe substitute,” said Chuck. “They want to talk about unethical behaviors in their industries but they are afraid to talk about it. By substituting an issue affecting a sports team, for example, sexual harassment or a case of nepotism or entitlement, it opens a new vista for discussion.”

Not surprisingly, it works the other way. When Chuck talks to those associated with sports about business ethics fraud, from athletes to conference executives, it is a safer road to go down than talking about the same issues in their sport.

There is an important intersection here and Chuck has been the first to explore some of those issues in-depth.

There are, obviously, ethical issues that strongly affect athletes (such as NCAA restrictions or the improper use of social media) however, even those issues are often paralleled in the business world.
